US west coast trip – part I

2010 July 3

For about two years ago we (my girlfriend and I) decided that we wanted to do the US West coast road trip.

I have visited some of the places before but never been in San Francisco, and with my focus on social media and tech development it is almost a given we had to go there.

The purpose of the “US west coast Trip” hopefully series of blog posts ;-) is not meant to be a – we are on vacation – look here what we just saw – wow it’s a big tree – today we went on a canal tour of the endlessly doesn’t matter canal – series of blog posts.

The general idea is that no doubt this trip lies in an energetic field between traveling, exploring, recharging and focusing on my more work related passions – it’s the thoughts and experiences from that energetic field I will be writing about in this blog series.

So the trip has started, we left Copenhagen 2 days ago and landed in SF on the 1st of July in the afternoon, and by now we have spend a day and a half in the SF, doing all the traditional sightseeing.

The day ended yesterday in a book store, we bought about 24 books – I am like an addict when I get to a bookstore in London or in the US – so many exciting books and they cost half of what they do in Denmark.

Most of the books I chose for the trip and to bring home, where about social media, marketing, building business etc. from people I love to read like Malcome Gladwell, Tara Hunt, Seth Godin to new author experiences to me like Tony Hsieh – the CEO from Zappos – just started to read his ´Delivering Happiness´- so far it’s a great read, really like the way he wrights.

On the first 2 days there are 3 things I want to touch briefly and that I might elaborate more on in later posts.

British Airways – are you listening?

When we checked in at the airport in Copenhagen we got seated on the London – San Francisco part of the trip with multiple rows between us. I thought – hey I am a customer that has a problem – let me tweet and see if somebody is listening – no responses. I where not looking for a special treatment if they could not do any thing – me only other way where stand in that awful long line of people with complaints or changes to BA flights in terminal 5 of Heathrow – I am not famous for being a tolerant person when it comes to waiting in lines – so with no answer or help on twitter – I completed the flight as a little less happier customer.

Using Foursquare in San Francisco

The location based platform, have been more for fun and entertainment – using it in Copenhagen, not a lot of people on it – and its not often you actually is at the same check in as your network.

But in a place like San Francisco, you can use Foursquare as an on the road tips and recommendation system. We found and chose a couple of dining places from  using foursquare and looking at the tips people added.

Yelp.com

This service where recommended to us by a friend before leaving home. Its basically a review sight on basis of “real peoples” reviews – on primarily shopping, dining, events, nightlife etc.

It all based on ordinary people reviewing the places – and it works in more than just one city.

We have briefly been using the service, but believe we will use it a lot the following 22 days.

Meeting the founders of Bees Award.

Enough for today – at 11 am today I am suppose to meet with the founders of The Bees Award – the first international social media marketing award – that are going to be held here in San Francisco on the 9th of November this year.

I am looking forward to talking to the guys, getting some insights for a post at our blog at Minjdumpers.com – and I will probably do a short post on how it went as the next post on this blog.
