Today is a day to use Social Media to support social change

2010 June 26

Today is a good day to use Social Media to support social change – and why today?

The 26th of June

The United Nations has designated 26thJune as the International Day Against Torture to emphasize the importance of the right to personal dignity and security of all individuals around the world, guaranteed within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Support the World Without Torture initiative

For exactly a month ago on May 26th an initiative called World Without Torture was launched on Facebook and Twitter and in less than two weeks, more than 2000 people from 40 countries joined.

On the Facebook page a global community of people who share the dream of a World Without Torture is growing by the minute to keep the fight against torture high on the agenda.

Every day, thousands of people are tortured somewhere in the world and the greatest threat to the fight against torture is apathy. In the community people are encouraged to share their personal experiences, which breaks the silence surrounding torture and keep the stories of torture survivors alive.

I strongly believe that social media can be used of making small dents in the universe and that we in collaboration with social media enthusiasts around the world can support this important cause.

You can support the cause by:

- Doing a blog post about the World Without Torture initiative

- Encourage people to join http://facebook.comWorldWithoutTorture or follow on http://Twitter.com/WithoutTorture

The international NGO – the IRCT behind World Without Torture

The IRCT is a global organisation that is the umbrella for more than 140 independent torture rehabilitation organisations in more than 70 countries. Each year their members treat more than 100,000 torture survivors and their families. The IRCT has over 25 years’ experience.

So if you believe like I do, that Social Media can be used to small and positive dents in the universe – please show your support by blog, tweet, join and spread http://WorldWithoutTorture.org
