Going to San Francisco and meeting interesting people thanks to social media
Only 10 days and its time to board a plane out of Copenhagen – destination – the US west coast.
24 is the number of days, my girlfriend and I is traveling up and down, primarily the cost from SF to San Diego with a detour through Yosemite Park and the city of sin – Las Vegas.
Now this post is not a traveling post, it’s a post about using social media to meet new and interesting people on the other side of the world and a little bit about using social media as a tool when traveling around.
For a few months ago, I got an email from a woman, Jane Jordan-Meier, she had on Slideshare found one of our (Mindjumpers) case study presentations on social media communication crisis, and wanted to hear if she could use it in a book she where writing about managing crisis communication on digital medias and of course she could use it. I wrote to her and soon we started collaborating on other case studies both for an article I where writing and additional cases for her book. Now Jane is living in SF and when I told her I where going there in July, she did not hesitate to invite me for coffee or a bottle of good Californian wine.
For two weeks ago the Swedish division of Big Mouth, send a tweet to something called Bees Awards, which is the first international social media marketing award show. In the tweet Mindjumpers where mentioned as a great insightful blog on social media from Denmark (thanks again @bigmouth_sweden).
I found out Bees Award where held and planned out of SF, so why not reach out to the founder of Bees Award, Bastien Beauchamp, asking for a meet-up learning more about the Bees Award. So I did and, and he where all good and ready for a meet-up, so now I hopefully will get some great insides about the awards for a blog post on our Mindjumpers blog.
Now this is what I love about social media, using them will bring new and unexpected relations and probably along that road generate valuable experiences and outcomes. I am looking so much forward to both meeting up with Jane and Bastien.
What social media tool will I be using the most on our trip – no doubt its going to be Foursquare. Not that I think a lot of my network will be checking in nearby, but using it to explore the areas we are visiting. Foursquare is for me a great people driven tool to compliment the use of Google Maps, when traveling to new destinations.
